There are wide varieties of spring solutions for a certain application.
Sometimes, to choose right steel strip spring to meet circumstance requirement of your new product could be a critical mission.
The case shows you how Ming Tai Industrial Co. and customer consult together about choosing best solution between constant torque spring and power spring for retracting function.

At the first, the customer request for a constant torque spring for retractor mechanisms. They searched for a high life cycle spring. At least 600,000 times. The force output is 1.3 N. In generally, the longer cycle life leads the spring bigger.
However, the available space for this retractor is limited. It is about 50x40x20 mm. This is one challenge of this project. Moreover, the stroke requirement of this device is very short. It’s about 50mm.
To break through the space limit and to reach long life cycle request, we suggest customer to use power spring instead of constant torque spring.
The two advantages of using the power spring instead of constant torque spring in this project are as follows:
First of all, the life cycle can have a great increasing. Using power spring can solve the problem of short fatigue life of constant torque spring.
Especially when the stroke requirement is very short.
Secondly, the volume of retractor applied with power spring will be smaller than the constant torque spring one. Constant torque spring need two drums, one storage drum and one output drum.
But for power spring, you need only one drum. This drum is simultaneously the case of power spring and also a spool for the wire.

| However, power spring and constant torque spring feature its advantage respectively. For some application, using constant torque spring is more beneficial while high number of working turn is required. Compared to power spring, the volume increasing is smaller when the same number of turns are added. Moreover, constant torque spring can provide more constant torque than power spring. The curve of torque is flatter.
